Abstract

The article reveals the multidimensional nature of psychological interaction in the multicultural educational space of a modern university undergoing fundamental transformation under the influence of intensified academic mobility and a significant increase in the number of international students. This leads to the intersection of diverse value attitudes, communication models, cognitive styles, and behavioral patterns among representatives of various ethnic groups. The multicultural environment emerges as a qualitatively new socio-psychological formation that generates specific patterns of functioning and requires a rethinking of traditional approaches to the pedagogical process, taking into account the deep psychological aspects of intercultural contact. These include multilevel barriers ranging from language difficulties and differences in nonverbal communication to divergences in basic cognitive schemas and value orientations, where cultural distance acts as a key predictor of adaptation success and academic performance. The phenomenon of acculturative stress is analyzed, manifesting in heightened anxiety, feelings of loneliness, decreased self-esteem and motivation, with pronounced variability according to students’ regions of origin: minimal integral indicators are characteristic of representatives of Central Asia due to cultural proximity and language competence, whereas the maximum stress load, including cultural disorientation, social isolation, and perceived discrimination, is observed among students from Africa. For those from Southeast Asia, the language barrier predominates alongside moderate disorientation; nostalgia remains a universal component. The dynamics of acculturation strategies are considered, demonstrating a natural transition from the predominance of separation at the initial stages of residence to the growth of integration orientations with increased length of study, while a certain proportion of marginalization attitudes is retained. These attitudes reflect cultural uncertainty and point to the need for systemic support. Particular attention is devoted to the intercultural competence of teachers as a central resource mediating adaptation. The behavioral component associated with the adaptation of pedagogical strategies demonstrates the most pronounced connections with academic achievement, satisfaction with the process, stress reduction, group involvement, and motivation to continue studies, in contrast to the cognitive and affective components, whose dynamics vary depending on length of service. Qualitative aspects emphasize the culturally specific understanding of psychological safety – from avoiding loss of face for Asian students to countering racial prejudices for Africans and taking into account religious-gender factors for representatives of the Middle East – as well as the challenges for educators in balancing the needs of heterogeneous groups within a single class. These challenges require a high degree of reflection, empathy, and flexibility. Overall, psychological interaction emerges as a phenomenon mediated by the mutual influence of cultural, personal, and institutional factors. It requires synchronous intervention at the individual-psychological, pedagogical, and institutional levels to overcome segregation, stereotyping, and isolation, thereby facilitating the formation of global competencies and the effective management of cultural diversity in the context of the globalization of higher education. This determines the high practical and theoretical relevance of the material for the development of adaptation programs, advanced training modules, and institutional strategies based on consideration of the regional specifics of stress load, critical periods in the formation of acculturation strategies, and the priority of practical pedagogical skills.
